It was a heartbreaking finish to a solid season for the Sigourney boys’ basketball team on Monday when they traveled to face Iowa Valley in a first round class 1A district game and the Savages were on the wrong side of a 45-42 score.

The Tigers had the slight 13-10 edge after one, but a 15-8 Savage second gave them a 25-21 lead at the break. Iowa Valley brought the offense in the third winning that frame 20-13 and it was a struggle in the fourth for both teams with a 4-4 period that allowed the home Tigers to hold on. Brody Ward led the victors with 18 points and Caleb Haack brought in 17 rebounds. The three Savage seniors were the team’s leading scorers with Levi Crawford recording 13 points, Bo Schmidt had 10, and Ethan Shifflett finished with seven.

Iowa Valley improves to 18-4 and they face New London today in the district semifinal. Sigourney closes the year 13-9, their most wins since 2015.
