A trip to the state tournament in Des Moines is on the line tonight at Iowa City West High School when the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls basketball team takes on the Davenport Assumption Knights in the Class 3A Region 4 finals. The Golden Hawks come into the game at 15-8 on the year after an opening round playoff win over Tipton and a regional semifinal win Wednesday over West Burlington 64-58. In the victory over the Falcons four Golden Hawks got to double figures, led by the trio of Maddie Nonnenmann, Josie Greiner and Landry Pacha all with 11 points. On the year, the Hawks are scoring 47 points per game and giving up 42 while shooting 37% from the floor with 30 rebounds 12 steals and assists and 14 turnovers. Individual leader for Mid-Prairie is Maddie Nonnenmann. The school’s fifth all-time leading scorer is averaging 16 points per game, 10th in 3A. Amara Jones leads Mid-Prairie with four assists and three steals. Landry Pacha is best on the glass with six boards per night.
Davenport Assumption has a 14-9 mark coming into play tonight. They beat Central Lee to open the tournament and then got by No. 7 West Liberty on the road in Wednesday’s regional semifinal 39-37 where they were led by Dawsen Dorsey’s 12 points. On the year, the Knights score 47 points per game and give up 44, shooting 39% from the floor with 26 rebounds, 10 steals, nine assists and 12 turnovers. Individual leaders for Assumption include Ava Schubert at 13 points and six rebounds per game and Dorsey with three assists and three steals per night. On Wednesday’s KCII postgame show, Mid-Prairie head coach Danny Hershberger talked about the keys for his girls success on Saturday. “The biggest thing for us is to communicate on defense. If we’re all on the same page we feel like we’re a pretty tough team to score on. Rebounding and turnovers are always huge for us. Trust ourselves. Believe in ourselves. Believing in our teammates. That’s our theme during this postseason run.”
The Golden Hawks and Knights have not met since a 2008 playoff contest that Assumption won 53-26 en route to a state title. Mid-Prairie has never beaten Davenport Assumption. The Golden Hawks are looking to make their eighth trip to the state tournament and first since 2016 , Assumption their 18th and ninth since 2010.
