For the third consecutive postseason the Winfield-Mt. Union and Burlington Notre Dame girls’ basketball teams met up and for the third straight winter the Nikes prove to be the Wolves’ kryptonite. No. 7 BND ended WMU’s campaign on Friday in a class 1A regional semifinal by a 68-36 final score.
The Wolves held serve after eight minutes by countering an early Nike run to trail just 13-10 at the end of one. Notre Dame started to get hot and it lasted the rest of the night by building a 34-19 halftime lead and 50-31 after three en route to the 32 point win. The Nikes nailed 10 triples including five from Reagan Engberg and the senior finished with a game-high 22 points. The Wolves were minus six in the rebounding department and minus 10 in turnovers. Keely Malone led the squad with 12 points and Melina Oepping hauled in 11 boards.
Head Coach Mitch Wachs tells KCII Sports the final score was not an indicator of how the game played out. “Anybody that just saw the score is not going to understand what that game looked like. We went on a nice run to close the first quarter and was right there. We played solid all night, but they just hit shots. It seemed like every time we had a good defensive possession and forced a miss shot we just couldn’t secure the rebound. They made us pay off second chances and that was a big story in the game.”
BND improves to 22-0 and they advance to Wednesday’s regional final against English Valleys. WMU bows out at 19-5 and they bid farewell to a pair of seniors in Jobey Malone and Carlee Sloan.
