Southeast Iowa made it’s mark at the 2022 boys state wrestling tournament last weekend. Nine wrestlers from the area were in action on the mat with four carving out spaces on the podium. Top area finish came in 1A from WACO’s Jonah Clark at 220lbs where he was runner-up. He went 3-1 on the weekend, his only loss came in the Saturday night championship match to Jared Thiry of Don Bosco by 8-1 decision.
In class 2A at 120lbs, Columbus-Winfield-Mt. Union’s Lane Scorpil finished fourth place after a 3-2 weekend. He dropped his first match in the semifinals, then rebounded to take a consolation match before dropping the third place bout to Carter Kolthoff of BCLUW by 6-2 decision.
A pair of Sigourney-Keota wrestlers each finished in sixth place. At 160lbs, Cade Molyneux went 3-3 on the weekend, dropping his first match in the quarterfinals before bouncing back to win a pair consolation bouts and drop another before ultimately falling in the fifth place match by 9-6 decision to Kane Zuehl of West Hancock. His teammate Conner Reed at 220lbs also went 3-3 on the weekend. After dropping his first match, he won three straight on the backside of the bracket before dropping two straight to end the tournament including the fifth place match by fall to Jayden Soard of South Central Calhoun.
Competing at state this weekend but not placing included Mid-Prairie’s Gannon Callahan in 2A and Reanah Utterback of Sigourney-Keota, Louden Huisenga of WACO and Easton Schlabaugh and Carlos Valenzuela of Highland in class 1A.
