Mid-Prairie senior Carter Harmsen reached the 1,000 point club in late January, and he has continued his climb through the Golden Hawk record books. With his 27 point night against the Comets in a 59-27 win on January 24th, Harmsen became the eighth player to hit the milestone in program history.

In the month since, Harmsen has put up another 143 points to move him into the top four on the all-time list. During that time he passed 2010 grad Tanner Miller who finished with 1,000 points, 2008 alum Darian Patterson who ended with 1,022 points, 1991 graduate and current assistant coach Kelby Bender and his 1,031 points and Harmsen recently moved into fourth on the all-time scoring list after passing 2000 graduate Brent Showalter and his 1,047 points. He spoke recently with KCII Sports about what the feat means to him. “When I got to 1,000, I was definitely thinking about it. I knew (West Liberty) always played decent defense against me so I was going to have to have a good game. Once I got it, it was definitely enjoyable to get 1,000. It obviously means something, but it doesn’t mean the most. I like team success a lot more than personal success. As long as we get to state and do well at state, 1,000 points will be a smaller milestone of this season. It’s definitely special. I like adding to the tradition of basketball success at Mid-Prairie.”

Harmsen currently has 1,152 career points, leaving him behind only 1971 alum Steve Mast in third with 1,160 points, 1998 graduate Randy Jirsa in second with 1,433 points and all-time program leader 2005 grad Travis Kern with 1,503 points.

Harmsen and the Golden Hawks will next be in action Saturday when they vie for the school’s first state tournament bid since 2010 against Northeast Goose Lake in the class 2A substate final in Muscatine. You can hear all of the action between the Hawks and Rebels live tomorrow night on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com, beginning with the Washington HyVee Pregame Show at 6:30 and tip at 7p.m. from Muscatine High School.
