state-auditor

Washington County’s revenues saw a 10.2% increase in fiscal year 2021 according to an audit from the state auditor.

This is a significant increase from fiscal year 2020 which saw a 1% increase, and is due to an increase in contributions from the Iowa Department of Transportation for road infrastructure. The county’s expenses increased by 9.3%, slightly lower than its 10.8% increase in fiscal year 2020. The report states the most recent increase in expenses is due primarily to the communications center project and related equipment and an increase in construction of county roads. The audit reported 12 findings related to the receipt and expenditure of taxpayer funds, addressing issues such as lack of segregation of duties, lack of independent review to ensure the accurate reporting of capital assets, and lack of policies and procedures over computer systems. Eight of the 12 findings are repeated from the previous year. To read the full report visit here.
