Mid-Prairie wrestler Cael Garvey stands alone with the most falls in Golden Hawk history. The senior broke the previous school record of 96, held by former Hawk Phirom Peterschmidt, in the home stretch of his final season, with a pin of Aiden Hewitt of Wilton at the River Valley Conference Championships in Monticello, en route to the league title at 195lbs. He reached the 100 pin mark, a milestone only 208 wrestlers in the history of the sport in Iowa have seen, with a fall over Jack Geels of Williamsburg to wrap up a sectional title at Benton on February 5th. Garvey spoke after getting to 100 about the accomplishment. “(In that match) I was trying to get into that kid and he just kept trying to back away from me. We ended up going close to the edge of the mat and I had double overs, so I guess I just threw him and put him away. This feels really good. I am one of the top people and I can say that I got 100 pins in my high school career.”
His first career fall was his first career victory, November 27th of 2018 when he put Chayse Irving of Eddyville-Blakesburg on his back in four minutes. Garvey would finish that freshman season with a 29-21 record at 160lbs. He recorded 22 of his 29 victories in his first season by pin. As a sophomore Garvey posted a 39-8 record with time spent at 160 and 170lbs. He recorded 26 of his 39 wins by fall. As a junior, Garvey went 32-3 on the year. He reached the halfway point to 100 with his 50th pin on December 5th of 2020 when he beat Levi Lowney of Fort Madison by fall in 1:19 in the Jeremy Fulk Classic. Of Garvey’s 32 victories that season, 27 of them were by pin. He qualified for the state tournament his junior year and scored one fall in Des Moines. As a senior, Garvey went 37-4, 26 of his victories coming by pin to finish with 101 total falls in his career. Garvey finished his Mid-Prairie career with a 137-36 overall record.
