The Washington Community Theater group is ready to grace the stage for their second production since the pandemic in a play that pits the virtues of kindness and affection against greed and dishonesty in a comedic setting.
“The Curious Savage” features a cast of 11 local actors and tells the story of the titular Mrs. Savage who has been left millions of dollars by her deceased husband and wants to make the best use of it. In an effort to get their hands on the fortune, Savage’s grown-up step children commit her to a mental institution to “bring her to her senses.” Washington High School Band Director Don Hughes is taking a break from the music to direct the play, his second nonmusical production. Hughes is very excited about the cast, many of whom are Washington Community Theater veterans, “One of the things that I like to do is give the actors as much room to find their characters, find themselves. If they have ideas, go for it and it’s a very creative cast and the show has just kind of come to life and then I just started by pushing them around and saying, ‘Hey, you should move here, you should move here,’ and they’ve taken it and run with it and it’s really, it’s their show.”
Performances of “The Curious Savage” will be at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday and March 18th and 19th at the Washington Community Center near the Washington County Fairgrounds, with a matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 20th. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students.
