The Washington County Board of Supervisors approved the maximum property tax dollars they can levy for fiscal year 2023 during Tuesday’s meeting.

This is the third year since a state law was passed requiring counties and municipalities to hold a separate public hearing and resolution from the overall budget. The resolution states that the maximum property tax dollars for general county services and rural county services shall not exceed $10,388,526 and $1,351,840, respectively. This represents a 2% increase from the maximum property tax dollars requested last fiscal year. County Budget Director Cyndi Sinn pointed out that the rural county services amount proposed for fiscal year 2023 is actually lower than the amount of $1,523,812 that was approved for 2022. Besides holding a public hearing, a two-thirds majority vote is required to approve a property tax levy that generates a revenue increase of 2% or more.
