540th street north of Kalona in Johnson County will receive a major face lift over the next three years. The project will cost more than $7 million in total with projects broken down annually. Work will begin in 2022 on reconstruction of a stretch of the roadway from Highway 1 east to Gable Avenue, which would include Stringtown and Central Discount Groceries at a cost of $815,000.

The 2023 section of work will focus on the surface from Highway 1 west to Calkins Avenue Southwest, which would include the Angle Road intersection, Hillcrest Academy and Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, at a cost of $4.1 million. In 2024, work will push further west from Calkins Avenue to Awesome Corner at the Iowa and Johnson County line. That segment of work will cost $2.2 million.

These projects were approved by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors at their March 17th meeting.
