A hallmark of southeast Iowa has been revitalized as crowds return to the Wellman Skating Rink. The venue is one of just a few of its kind remaining in the state. An entity of the City of Wellman, the rink is currently operated by Recreation Manager Brenda Reasor, an employee of the city. She has been in that position since November and has overseen changes like increased hours and theme nights. The next step for the facility is an equipment upgrade. Reasor is overseeing a fundraiser with a goal to enhance the rink’s sound system. Reasor spoke recently with KCII news about possible planned improvements with monies raised. “We’re looking at doing a center hang speaker as opposed to the speakers on the four corners. We need a new mixer and wires. We’re going to have to have some new electrical installation to go with this system and there may be some other expenses that come up during the replacement. A lot of the younger kids when they first walk in, usually it’s a dark atmosphere, and they’re ‘WOW!’ That’s what we get a lot with the lights and everything. Some of the older crowd is ‘oh this place looks the same as when I was young!’ I think peopled are “wowed” by it when they first come in. I would just like to continue to provide a safe and fun atmosphere for people. I would like to maybe do some future expanding. Maybe add on a food court type area.”

Total cost of the equipment is roughly $3,000 with installation and other project expenses pushing the campaign goal to $5,000. To get things started, they are teaming with the Washington Pizza Ranch for a tip night on Monday, April 4th from 5-8p.m. The rink project will receive 100% of tips and 10% of sales during those three hours. Those who would like to donate aside from the tip night can make contact during operational hours at the Skating Rink or at City Hall in Wellman.
