The Highland boys golf team defended their home course at Blue Top Ridge on Monday, beating the visiting Hillcrest Academy Ravens 195-197 in the season opener for the both squads. Things were tightly packed at the top of the individual standings with four players finishing within one shot of each other, led by the Huskies Chase Schultz as medalist with his round of 44. He spoke after the meet with KCII sports about the day. “My goal was to shoot under 55 or so. This is the first time I have gone out for school golf. Was looking to play bogey golf. There were some I managed to par and I birded hole one and that boosted my confidence for the whole round. Hole seven is a long one and I pared that. I knew I was shooting well but I left a lot of putts short so that’s something I have to work on.”

Highland’s Peyton Yeggy won a three-way tie by cardback to take medalist runner-up honors with a 45.

Top scorers for the Ravens were Liam Schrock and Jace Rempel who finished with rounds of 45. They talked after the meet about their day. Rempel said, “I was looking to come out and shoot mid 40s and see where I’m at to improve down the road. I had a stretch of three pars that felt good.”

Schrock said, “This is the first time I had ever been in a high school golf meet. I think I did pretty good for the first time. On one of the par 3s I put my approach within like five feet.”

Other Ravens included Luke Schrock at 52, Alex Niemeyer 55 and Josiah Beachy 59. Highland is off Tuesday while Hillcrest travels to New London.
