It was a monumental night for the Sigourney-Keota soccer team on Monday when they invaded Riverside and upended Highland 4-1 in the program’s first ever varsity win.

Competing as a JV team last year, the Cobras got out to a fast start in their second varsity contest by tallying all four of their goals in the first half. Ty Shafranek was the hammer offensively finishing with a hat trick and Carter Wyatt had the other score. Jack Clarahan finished the evening with two assists and Brock Alderson was steady in goal. The young Huskie bunch did get a first half goal from freshman Ayden Havel and Eli Slaymaker managed seven saves.

S-K Head Coach Dillon Maass tells KCII Sports what went right in the victory. “We didn’t allow them to get into their offense much in the first half because we were being aggressive. We were winning the ball higher up the field and therefore we were able to use our speed. Ty did a great job dribbling through the defense and placing the shots where they needed to be.”

The Cobras turned around and had a makeup contest against Central Lee last night and fell 3-1. Wyatt had the lone goal assisted by Shafranek. Alderson picked up 13 saves at the other end.

S-K is now 1-2 and Highland dropped to 0-2.
