It was a shorter night of track in Wayland on Tuesday for the WACO Relays, but Mother Nature didn’t stop a pair of KCII area teams from doing some serious damage in a lightning shortened meet.

The first meet at WACO this year was able to get through 14 events before the weather stopped competition after the 800m run and at the time the Lone Tree girls and Columbus Community boys stood on top. The Lion girls racked up 80 points to beat second place English Valleys by six. Vivian Zaruba bested the entire field in the 3000m (12:42) and the 4x800m relay also won (14:14). Second place showings included the sprint medley (2:03), distance medley (5:06), 4x200m (2:02), Rylee Shield in the 400m (1:05), Kasey Chown in the high jump (4’6’’), and Avery Morarie in the long jump (14’4.25’’). The host Warriors finished fifth out of nine teams with 44 points and Columbus had six. WACO’s Zoey Dennler was a champion in the 100m hurdles (18.43) and the shuttle hurdle relay (1:19) also nabbed first. Libby White was the only individual competing for the Wildcats and she was third in the discus (81’1’’).

Columbus ran away with the boys title with 110 points while English Valleys was second with 84, WACO fourth with 74, and Lone Tree sixth with 30. Columbus’ Kaden Amigon did his thing in the 400m winning in 53.08 and Isaac Acosta was victorious in the 800m (2:13). They had six second place events including Amigon in the 100m (11.48), Freddy Vergara in the 800m (2:14) and 3200m (10:34), Bryce Grimm in the discus (106’5’’), Russell Coil in the shot put (38’11.25’’), and the 4x800m (9:36). The Warriors had three event champs including Simeon Reichenbach in the 110m hurdles (15.47), Jonah Clark in the shot put (41’3.5’’), and the shuttle hurdle relay (1:08). The Lion shuttle hurdle relay was second (1:09) and Cade Patterson nabbed fourth in the 110m hurdles (18.07).
