Sometimes it only takes one. That was the case for the Mid-Prairie boys soccer team on Thursday when they grabbed their second win of the season 1-0 over visiting Columbus Junction on an ugly weather night in Wellman. Despite the conditions, the Golden Hawks controlled the action, formulating several chances, a total of 21 shots in the match, but the only one that found the back of the net was a Noah Ford strike in the game’s 31st minute. Mid-Prairie took that 1-0 lead to the break, and all the way to the final whistle. After the match, Ford talked about his goal, and one of the defensive captains, Jarrett Hoffman, talked about Mid-Prairie’s effort on that side of the ball. Ford said, “crossing the ball was important. We were pounding that every day on the right side. On the goal, the ball found my feet on the deflection and I just tapped it in. Communication for us is important and I feel like this team has a lot. We still need to work on it of course, nothing is ever perfect. We also use the goal keeper as part of the offense a lot and I think that just helps us.”

Hoffman said, “We just controlled the ball tonight and didn’t really let them get any touches. They couldn’t connect passes. I’m a senior and I’ve been playing since freshman year. I can see the whole field so I am able to tell everybody where to go. It was tough tonight with the wind, especially in the first half when we didn’t have it. It was tough to get up the field.”

With the win, Mid-Prairie is 2-0, Columbus falls to 1-1. The Golden Hawks are back in action in Wellman Friday hosting Monticello as part of a boy/girl River Valley Conference doubleheader. The Wildcats are off until a Monday trip to Tipton.
