A pursuit ended in charges for a Muscatine man Tuesday in rural Johnson County. Just after midnight, Johnson County Deputies responded to a report of suspicious activity in rural Riverside. Court documents show an individual attempted to enter a private, unoccupied building through doors, removing a screen and then using a log to force their way in through a sliding glass door.
Authorities located the vehicle and a short pursuit ended at Hills Access Park, when the driver drove down the boat ramp and into the Iowa River. The driver, 43-year-old Francisco Nunez, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was able to exit the vehicle before it became submerged and swam toward the middle of the river where he was rescued by deputies with a throw rope. Nunez was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and then to the Johnson County Jail where he was charged with eluding involving an injury, OWI, drugs or participating in a felony second or subsequent offense, a class C felony, and operating while intoxicated second offense, driving while barred, and third-degree attempted burglary, all aggravated misdemeanors, as well as several traffic violations. The vehicle was removed from the waterway by the Johnson County Metro Dive Team.
