It was the first setbacks of the spring for the Washington soccer teams on Monday when they dropped Southeast Conference nail biters with Fort Madison.
Fresh off of a double overtime win against Mount Pleasant on Thursday, the Demon girls were in for extra soccer once again at the Washington Wellness Park, this time falling 2-1 in a shootout. Both teams scored in the opening half with Greta Rothe notching her ninth goal of the season. That 1-1 score stayed true through regulation and a pair of overtimes before the Bloodhounds (2-1) handled the PKs by a 4-1 tally. Elyse Hunt held her own in goal with 13 saves. The Demons drop to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the SEC.
The Washington boys made the trek to Fort Madison (3-3) and was also on the short end of a 2-1 final. The Bloodhounds scored within the first 10 minutes and got some insurance with their second goal in the final five minutes. In the waning moments, Angel Mata connected on his only shot of the game, but time ran out on the comeback. Cole Anderson had eight saves at the other end. The loss was short lived for the orange and black, as they welcomed Sigourney-Keota last night and handled business by an 11-1 count. The tally was 3-0 at the break, but a seven goal spurt in a 24 minute span allowed for the mercy-rule victory. Seven players found the back of the net with Fredy Aguilar, Cole Anderson, Kevin Marcelino, and DaShaun Westphal-Edwards all picking up a pair of goals. Brayan Arreola, Emre Akgul, and Erick Ortez Jr. also contributed to the scoring and Marcelino had three assists. Will Gilchrist-Brock managed three saves. They are now 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the SEC. S-K drops to 1-3.
