Further information has been released regarding a shots fired incident Tuesday night near the Iowa Wesleyan University campus.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department states they were dispatched to the area of West Broad and North Jackson streets at about 8:33 p.m. for a call of a large fight. While en route officers were notified of shots fired. Initial investigation determined that more than 20 people were fighting and at some point a handgun was displayed and eventually shot, striking an 18-year-old local victim. The victim was transported to the hospital and later released with minor injuries. Due to the proximity and concern, an Iowa Wesleyan University dorm room was placed on lockdown and searched. Two suspects were identified and one was quickly located. The other was found a short time later, and they were taken into custody and charged with participating in a riot, an aggravated misdemeanor.
In a statement released by the university, the campus was notified to shelter in place while the Henry County Sheriff’s Office also responded. At this time there is no immediate threat to the campus community or surrounding neighborhood. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges will be forthcoming.
