The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk soccer teams survived a trip to the jungle in Tipton Tuesday to take on the Tigers in a River Valley Conference doubleheader. The newly No. 1 ranked Mid-Prairie boys needed overtime, but they came out on top in a 1-0 victory. Despite outshooting the Tigers 22-12 in the game and holding an 8-2 corner kick advantage, things were scoreless through the first 80 minutes. Jarrett Hoffman broke that tie in the 88th minute with a free kick goal. Head coach Pat Cady broke down the play on the KCII PM Sports Page, “We got fouled pretty hard down in the final third and had Jarrett (Hoffman) take the free kick. Tipton had probably nine guys in the box and we put four guys back post. I told him to try to put it on the back post, we have four guys, there and leave it about three feet off the ground and it should cause them some problems. He struck it. It was a good hard ball, heading right toward Collin Miller. He turned right at the last moment and it might have even nicked off of him. Then it went through two Tipton defenders and right past the goal keeper. Lot of happy fellas coming over to talk to Jarrett, congratulate him and thank him for getting that win for us.”

Justice Jones turned in a clean sheet for the Hawks with four saves. Mid-Prairie remains unbeaten on the year at 4-0, Tipton falls to 1-3. The Golden Hawks are back in action tonight when they host Cedar Valley Christian at the Wellman Rotary Soccer Fields at 5p.m.

The Mid-Prairie girls were also a one goal winner Tuesday in Tipton, tripping up the Tigers by a 5-4 count. The first half was a shoot out, with Mid-Prairie scoring the first two of the night, only to see the Tigers equalize before the Hawks would take a slim 4-3 lead into half. Out of the break each team found the back of the net once more to close the scoring. Esther Hughes scored four times in the Mid-Prairie win, giving her 14 goals for the year, second in class 1A. Ainsley Lueck had a pair of saves in goal. The Hawks had 20 total shots in the game, 14 of them on goal, compared to the Tigers 12 and nine in those categories respectively. Mid-Prairie also won the corner kick count 6-5. The win pushes Mid-Prairie back over .500 for the year at 3-2 ahead of road trip to Grinnell on Thursday.
