As signs of spring will further show this weekend, the City of Washington encourages residents to use their annual spring cleanup as an opportunity to dispose of unwanted household items.
The Yard Waste Center and Waste Water Treatment Plant at 1065 West Buchanan Street will be open from 7-11 a.m. Saturday for free disposal of items including general junk, furniture items like couches, mattresses, box springs, and recliners, and lawn mowers and equipment which must be gas and oil free for disposal. Appliances will be accepted for a $5 fee, and electronics are free to dispose of except for old tube televisions and CRT computer monitors, which the city mentions can be taken to Goodwill for free.
They will not accept household garbage or hazardous waste and materials, tires and waste oil, construction materials, concrete, brick or rock, latex paint, and items from outside the Washington city limits. This is not a curbside cleanup, and residents are asked to bring ID or a copy of their utility bill, and to stay in their vehicle during drop off. The city offers special pickups for an additional fee, and you can find more information in this newsletter.
