The Washington soccer programs were both in action at the Washington Wellness Park Thursday when they welcomed Southeast Conference rival Burlington to town. The Washington boys won their fourth straight, doubling up Burlington 4-2. In the sixth minute the Demons saw Freddy Aguilar find the back of the net on a helper from Brayan Arreola to go up 1-0. The second first half Washington goal came in the 14th minute when Arreola did it all on his own. Just two minutes later Emmanuel Raymundo was the man, finishing on an assist from Emre Akgul. The Demons led 3-1 at the break.

Washington would score once more after the intermission, Akgul had his second assist as DeShaun Westphal-Edwards dialed up a 51st minute goal. From there, the Demon defense made those tallies stand up, led by five saves from Will Gilchrist-Brock. After the match Raymundo and Randy Huertero spoke with KCII sports about the win. Huertero said, “This feels pretty good. We have grown greatly as a team. We have great chemistry. We all focus on the game we’re playing. We know we have to get this done and we get it done. We knew we couldn’t let up.”

Raymundo said about his goal, “I just saw the forward do a little fake after the ball went to his side. I saw the opportunity while the goalie was out so I shot it.”

The Demons are now 5-1 on the season.

The girls contest went Burlington’s way 5-2. Burlington scored first and Greta Rothe found the equalizer to send the match to half tied at one on a far post finish. After the break, Burlington got the offense started with four goals. Washington would get their second on a late Rothe penalty kick. After the match, Demon head coach Steven Caulk talked about how the night unfolded. “We’re a smaller school playing up against a larger school. I think we played 1-1 at half. I think we did a good job overall. I think there are some things where we can make some changes; be a little bit more aggressive, challenge in the air a little bit more, but I think we responded well. They scored the first goal. We win one back almost immediately afterward and we hold them to 1-1 at halftime. Second half, played some balls through, didn’t work out in our favor. They had some balls that did work in their favor. This is the case where I feel like the scoreline doesn’t reflect the actual game. It is what it is. Greta (Rothe) scores goals that way. A phenomenal individual effort.”

With the loss, Washington is now 6-2 on the year.
