We are at the point of the season where running out of ways to describe the Columbus Community boys’ track team is a real thing because the Wildcats keep running past the competition. For the sixth time this spring, the Wildcats captured a title on Tuesday with this time handling 10 opponents at the Sigourney Relays.
The blue and white compiled 104 points on a decent evening to run, 38 more points than second place Winfield-Mt. Union. To go along with a pair of runner-up finishes, Kaden Amigon did snatch gold in the 100m dash clocking in at 11.64 seconds. That was one of four event titles for Columbus with Isaac Acosta winning the 1600m (4:50), Freddy Vergara in the 3200m (10:57), and the distance medley relay of Jeff Hoback, Jon Miranda, Damian Vergara, and Acosta (3:55). WMU’s 66 points was enough for runner-up and they had two events strike gold with Cam Buffington winning the long jump (20’4.75’’) and the 4x100m of Eli Miller, Caleb Giese, Buffington, and Brenden Simmons (:46). Other area team scores included WACO seventh with 49 points, Highland ninth with 42, and Sigourney 11th with seven. The Warriors’ Braden Spain won the high jump (6’0’’) and the shuttle hurdle relay won consisting of Simeon Reichenbach, Zach Schmitz, Mason Miller, and Isaac Oswald (1:06). The Huskie 4x200m relay bested the field with Tyler Thompson, Brenton Bonebrake, Logan Bonebrake, and Connor Grinstead clocking in at 1:37.92. Cole Clarahan led the host Savages placing fifth in the long jump (17’5.25’’).
On the girls’ side, Highland had the top area finish in third out of 13 with 66 points while Pekin won with 130. Mackenzie McFarland handled the sprints winning the 100m (13.63) and 400m (1:06) and Sarah Burton had the longest leap in the long jump (16’2.5’’). The 4x100m (53.56 – Grace Prybil, Burton, Katelyn Waters, McFarland) and 4x200m (1:58 – MyLei Smith, Waters, Prybil, Burton) won in the relay events. WMU placed fourth with 58 points, WACO fifth with 55, Sigourney sixth with 44.5, and Columbus ninth with 25. Jobey Malone won again for the Wolves in the shot put (38’10.5’’) and the shuttle hurdle relay bested the field (1:15) with this team being Morgan Grelk, Kayreanna Sharar, Josie Nelson, and Keetyn Townsley. McKenzie Vradenburg won the 200m dash for the Warriors (28.87), Sigourney’s Carly Goodwin was runner-up in the 400m (1:07), and Lily Coil won for the Wildcats in the 400m hurdles (1:14).
