It was just the appetizer with the main course yet to come on Thursday at the annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, as one area athlete competed at day one of competition.

Winfield-Mt. Union’s Jobey Malone represented Southeast Iowa at the Blue Oval by throwing in the girls’ shot put. The senior finished 19th out of 23 with her best heave of 36’1’’ coming in her second throw. Top nine made the finals with Mount Pleasant’s Jadan Brumbaugh winning it all with 47’7’’. 

It will be a busy day two at Drake Stadium that begins this morning with a total of 24 area athletes competing from five area schools.
