The regular season is winding down for the Washington golf teams and Monday was a tune-up for conference with both squads cracking the top three at 18-hole tournaments.
The Demon girls played at Flint Hills in Burlington where they placed second out of 10 with a team score of 361, only being outdone by 4A Bettendorf with a 345. Makenna Conrad had the fourth lowest tally with an 84 and Kaylin Long was fifth with 86. Other scores included Alecia Goff 92, Mallary Johnson 99, Maci Williams 109, and Haley Mitchell 115. Head Coach Erin Thorius tells KCII Sports it was beneficial to see top notch competition. “We got the chance to see 4A schools and we haven’t had that much this year. We were put to the test against teams like Bettendorf and our girls rose to the challenge.” The squad is back at it tomorrow in Ottumwa.
The boys participated in the Fairfield Invite on the same course as today’s conference meet and they finished third out of seven with a score of 335. Albia was second with a 328 and the host Trojans won with a 322. Roman Roth reigned supreme in the 36 player field with a meet-medalist score of 74. Teague Mayer finished with an 84, Grant Sobaski 88, Isaac Vetter 89, John Prochaska 90, and Luke Beenblossom 91. Washington has already clinched the regular season Southeast Conference crown and they will try to snatch the tournament title today back in Fairfield with tee time set for 9 a.m.
