In a statement issued by the City of Wellman, residents were told that the water plant is currently operating with a different disinfectant to treat water. A pump failure occurred in the main well, necessitating the change from chlorine to chloramines.

As part of the memo, the city acknowledges that chloramines can cause issues for those dependent on dialysis machines. The condition, hemolytic anemia, is a disorder classified by red blood cells being destroyed faster than the body’s ability to make them. This can occur if the disinfectant is not completely removed from water used for dialysis. Complete removal requires some means, such as a charcoal filter to do so. Medical facilities should also determine if additional precautions are required for other equipment.

This water treatment may also be toxic to fish. If you have a fish tank, the city suggests that you make sure the chemicals and filters in use are designed to be used with water that has been treated with chloramines. Changing the filter is also suggested.

Any further questions should be directed to Wellman Waterworks at (319)330-1354. The city will notify residents prior to the change back to chlorine but no time table is given for pump repair or the chemical change at this time.
