The No. 1 in Class 1A Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team was handed it’s first defeat of the season Tuesday as the Hawks dropped a match in Iowa City to the No. 12 Iowa City Regina Regals 4-1. All five goals in the contest came on dead ball plays with Regina scoring on two penalty kicks and two free kicks, Mid-Prairie’s lone goal was off of a free kick. Regina would not trail on the night, grabbing the lead in the 17th minute on a Quinn Warren goal. The Regals doubled the advantage to 2-0 on a Emiliano Herrera-Sidwell strike. Leaving the score at 2-0 going to the break. Mid-Prairie broke through in the 58th minute on a Tucker Miller free kick goal to get within 2-1. The goal energized the Hawks who had a couple of chances to equalize on set pieces but were unable to find the back of the net. After Mid-Prairie got close, Regina found insurance down the stretch with Warren scoring his second goal and Evan Lacina adding his first in the final 15 minutes to secure the win. After the game, Golden Hawk head coach Pat Cady talked about what he saw. “(Regina) is definitely the best team we have played this year. They are very organized and we knew that coming in. It was a matter (on defense) of, can we get a guy slid in better and take away the angles. Drop down to two guys maybe instead of giving them three or four options. First half we didn’t play too bad I didn’t think. Once Tucker Miller made the goal, it’s a 2-1 game, if the corner was just shorter, Gunnar (Gingerich) had it, he had his head on it, it just went outside the post.”

The Hawks had five total shots, two on goal and a pair of corner kicks. The Regals forced Justice Jones to make seven saves. Mid-Prairie is now 9-1 on the year and will get ready for Sigourney-Keota Monday in Wellman.
