A couple of low scoring affairs played out on the turf at Bracewell Stadium on Monday and the Washington soccer teams found themselves on the wrong side of a Southeast Conference doubleheader sweep against Burlington.
The boys’ game was a stalemate until the final seconds of the first half when the Grayhounds (10-4) beat the buzzer to take a 1-0 advantage into the break. With just five minutes left, Manny Raymundo found the equalizer by launching a shot across the field that got past the outstretched hands of the goalie. A pair of overtimes ensued with Burlington finding the 2-1 edge after a goal in the 96th minute. The Demons drop to 10-3 overall and conclude the conference slate 7-3 in a tie for second. They host Columbus on Thursday.
The Demon girls couldn’t find any offense against the first place Grayhounds (10-4) and they fell 2-0. Burlington scored once in both halves that proved to be enough. Elyse Hunt managed 10 saves in goal for Washington. The girls finish in a tie for third in the SEC with a 5-5 league mark and 9-5 overall. They travel to face Mid-Prairie tomorrow.
