Some of the best in Class 1A boys and girls track in the state will vie for bids to the state meet at Thursday’s Sigourney state qualifier. Five KCII area boys and girls teams will compete on the oval including Hillcrest Academy, Keota, WACO, Winfield-Mt. Union and the home Savages.

On the boys side of the meet, WACO is the top area school in the Iowa Varsity Bound power rankings checking in at No. 30 out of 142 in the state. The Warriors along with the Wolves each have a pair of top 10 events according to performance standings in Class 1A. For WACO, Simeon Reichenbach is ninth in the 110 hurdles while the Warrior shuttle hurdle team of Isaac Oswald, Zach Schmitz, Mason Miller and Reichenbach is 10th, best in the meet. For the Wolves, Cam Buffington is ninth in the long jump, best in the meet, and Gabe Hemsworth 10th in the 400 hurdles. According to the 1A power rankings Danville is the top boys team in the mix, currently second in 1A.

On the girls side of the meet, Sigourney is the top area school in the power rankings at 62nd. Winfield-Mt. Union’s Jobey Malone has the lone top 10 performance mark in Class 1A for area schools, with the sixth best shot put throw in the state this year, top in the meet. Hillcrest Academy’s Leah Bontrager has the best time in the meet in the 800 coming into competition. According to the 1A power rankings, Pekin is the top girls team in the field, currently eighth in class 1A.

Those area schools will be joined by BGM, Danville, English Valleys, HLV, Montezuma, New London, Pekin, Tri-County, and Wapello. Each event champion plus the next best 14 performance marks across Iowa in 1A qualify for the state meet. Action starts at 4p.m. and continues into the evening at Sigourney high school.
