Three KCII area boys soccer teams will be part of the field of eight that get the annual Southeast Iowa Superconference Tournament underway Friday night. The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats are the third seed, the highest of any area team, and will meet six seed Wapello. The Wildcats enter play with an 8-4 overall record on the season, right at .500, 3-3 in the Superconference. In their last action, they doubled up Danville on the road 8-4, in an effort that included a seven goal first half. Columbus has outscored their opponents 47-26 on the year with two defensive shut outs. The Indians come into the match with their record at 3-12 overall. They beat Danville Tuesday 7-4. They have been outscored this year 104-36. Individually, they are led by Daniel Perez with 26 goals, second most in 1A. The Wildcats beat the Indians 10-3 in April.
Hillcrest Academy enters as the five seed. The Ravens are 5-6 on the year, 4-3 in the Superconference. They topped Wapello Monday in Kalona on Senior Night 7-0, behind Micah Gerber’s hat trick. The Ravens have outscored their opponents 30-22 on the year, including three defensive shut outs. Diego Ramos leads the Hillcrest attack with nine goals, Collin Miller has a team best four assists, and in goal Aiden Krabill has compiled a 76% save percentage with 68 stops. Central Lee is the host four seed. The Hawks are 5-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. Last time on the pitch they were shut out by Centerville 3-0. For the year, Central Lee has outscored their opponents 22-12. Ayden Kent leads the Hawks with 10 goals and four assists. In goal, Jacob Vollmer has an 83% save percentage. These two teams met in April in Kalona with the Ravens taking a 1-0 win.
The Highland Huskies are the eight seed in the field and come into the night with a 1-10 overall mark and are 0-6 in the Superconference. Last time out they were beaten by tonight’s opponent, Burlington Notre Dame 10-0 on the second of May. For the year, the Huskies have been outscored 83-8. Yahir Jimenez and Ayden Havel each have a team best three goals. Jimenez, Jack Peiffer and Jared Diaz each have an assist. In goal, Eli Slaymaker has made 102 saves with a 60% save percentage. Notre Dame is 10-3 on the year and a perfect 6-0 in the Superconference. They are ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in the latest poll from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. For the season, the defending state champion Nikes, have outscored opponents 61-11. Individually, they are led by Cole Ward and Gabe Zurita each with 14 goals, Parker Davis has 22 assists, and in goal, Arya Nowroozi has an 88% save percentage.
The winners of the Notre Dame/Highland and Hillcrest/Central Lee matchups will meet in the semifinals on Saturday. The victor between Columbus and Wapello will take on the winner of Danville and Mediapolis Saturday. The Wildcats are in action at MEPO at 6:30 Friday night, while the Ravens and Huskies are both in Donnellson, with the Hillcrest match starting at 5p.m. and the Huskies at 6:30p.m.
