While a southwestern to northeastern swath of Iowa is not experiencing drought conditions, most of Washington and some other surrounding counties continue to be abnormally dry, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor.

Looking at the National Weather Service’s Monthly Almanac, Washington’s total precipitation was over two-tenths higher than normal with 2.58 inches in March, though April’s rain total was more than an inch below normal with 2.6 received. So far this May, Washington has received 1.09 inches of precipitation, with the month’s normal is 2.20. The latest Crop Progress and Condition Report from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service shows Iowa’s topsoil moisture condition rating 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 17 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 4 percent very short, 19 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus.
