A pair of KCII area boys soccer clubs took the pitch at Burlington Notre Dame High School Saturday and saw their runs in the Southeast Iowa Superconference Tournament come to a close. The five seed Hillcrest Academy Ravens were beaten by the defending conference and state champion, and this year’s top seed in the tournament Notre Dame 8-0. The Nikes got the scoring started with a goal in the first 20 minutes and it was a steady stream of scoring thereafter with Notre Dame goals in the 23rd, 24th, 32nd and 36th minutes to make it 5-0 Nikes at the break. Notre Dame would score three times after intermission in the 51st, 60th and 77th minutes to finish the victory.
In the second semifinal, it was the three seed Columbus succumbing to second seeded Mediapolis for the second time this year by a 5-1 score. MEPO took a 3-0 lead into the half on goals in the fifth, 20th and 34th minutes. The Wildcats made a push on a Van Bawi goal in the 43rd minute to pull within 3-1 but the Bulldogs posted insurance tallies in the 68th and 73rd minute to finish the win.
Burlington, Notre Dame would go on to capture the tournament championship on their home field by blasting Mediapolis 10-0 in the final Saturday evening. With the losses, Hillcrest is now 6-7 on the season with a date at Washington tonight while Columbus falls to 9-5 and will open the playoffs Thursday back at Notre Dame against Centerville.
