A couple of area girls’ golf programs went home happy on Friday afternoon when Winfield-Mt. Union and Highland both advanced through the first round of class 1A regionals at Deerwood in New London.

Only four squads had enough for a team score with New London winning the 18-hole tournament carding a 383 and WMU placing second with 446. Since the Tigers advanced on their home course, a third team was allowed to move on with Highland occupying this spot shooting a 463. All five Wolves’ scores were separated by just 11 strokes with Ava Hagge having a 108, Alli Humphreys 109, Isabelle Kann 110, Afton Wilkerson 119, and Lily Freeman 119. The Huskies’ Adeline Krotz finished fifth in the field with a 105, Kelsi Cerny had a 110, Dani Kraus 120, Kerra Longbine 128, and Jenna Waters 128.

Highland and WMU now gear up for Wednesday’s regional final at Heritage Oaks in Wapello.
