Two strokes. That is what separated the Washington boys’ golf team from disappointing heartbreak and pure jubilation. Fortunately for Demon faithful they experienced the latter when they cracked the top two at Monday’s class 3A district meet in Shellsburg to clinch their first state bid since 2018.

It was a windy outing at Wildcat Golf Course where the Demons powered through and shot an 18-hole tally of 347 to place runner-up. That was just ahead of Marion, the first team left out, as they finished with a 349. Roman Roth had the fourth best score in the field pairing a 41 front nine with a 38 back and having a +9 score of 79. Luke Beenblossom shot an 86, Grant Sobaski 90, Isaac Vetter 92, Teague Mayer 96, and John Prochaska 106. Solon won the meet with a 315 and top individual was Marion’s Nathan Whalen with a 75.

Washington Head Coach Collin Stark tells KCII Sports what this means for his boys. “For our team and how young we are, this is a testament to how much we have improved. It has been four years since we have gone to state so this is a new experience for everyone. You have to feel good about our two seniors Grant and John to finish their careers at state. We look forward to going to Ames next week.”

The Demons will tee off for the big dance on Monday, May 23rd and Tuesday, May 24th at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.
