The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys soccer team wrapped up the year Monday, falling in the Class 1A substate semifinals to No. 13 West Liberty 2-1 at the Muscatine Soccer Complex. The Comets built a 2-0 lead in the first half on a pair of strikes from senior Felipe Molina, who scored in the 18th minute with a header on a Juan Mateo assist and then doubled the advantage with a 34th minute goal. Down by a pair at the break, the Hawks rallied to get on the board in the 76th minute when Owen Trimpe scored his second goal of the playoffs and ninth of the year to pull Mid-Prairie within one. However, the Hawks couldn’t find the equalizer down the stretch in a game that was highlighted by fouls and cards late. The Comets had nine shots on goal to Mid-Prairie’s four. Justice Jones had seven saves for Mid-Prairie. With the loss, the Golden Hawks end the year at 11-4, West Liberty improves to 12-3 and will play in Wednesday’s substate final against No. 6 Gladbrook-Reinbeck who was a 9-1 winner over Pella Christian.
The Golden Hawks say goodbye to seven seniors including Jack Pennington, Gunnar Gingerich, Jarrett Hoffman, Riley Yoder, Sam Harris, Diego Ayala and Justice Jones.
