With the spring sports season winding down, just one area soccer team still remains with the Washington girls and the Demons will try to keep it that way when they meet No. 9 Solon tonight in a class 1A region 7 semifinal.
Washington sits at 10-6, their first double-digit win season in at least the last decade. They got to this round after escaping by Central Lee 3-2 last week headlined by a pair of goals from Giselle Marcelino. The sophomore ranks third in the Southeast Conference with 25 goals on the spring and senior Greta Rothe is right behind in fourth with 23. Senior Elyse Hunt has done her part in goal with a league leading 191 saves. The Spartans are 15-3, winners of six straight, and blanked Mid-Prairie 2-0 in the first round. The defense has been stifling with 14 of their 15 wins being shutouts and they have only given up seven goals all season. Morgan Link carries most of the offense scoring 22 times thus far.
The victor will play either Van Meter (9-5) or Centerville (11-6) on Thursday for the right to go to state. Tonight’s action gets started at 6 p.m. at Spartan Stadium in Solon.
