It was opening night for the Washington summer teams on Tuesday when they welcomed a pair of teams for non-conference action.

As heard on KCII, the baseball squad battled back from some early adversity to give fans at Dick Sojka Memorial Field what they wanted in a 6-3 victory over Davenport Central. A long top of the first saw eight Blue Devils come to the plate and they cashed in on three runs only to have the Demons return the favor in the bottom half. A couple free passes and an error set up a RBI walk from Matt Wolf, RBI sac fly from Tim Willits, and run scoring single from Zeke Slagel. Slagel and Ethan Patterson had some fine defensive plays in the ballgame that helped that 3-3 tally stay true until the sixth. The top of the order did some damage with RBI knocks coming from Patterson, Ethan Zieglowsky, and Lucas Kroll that proved to be enough to mow down the Blue Devils in the seventh. Patterson picked up the win tossing the final four frames giving up two hits, no runs, no walks, and striking out five. The junior also had two of the six hits with a couple doubles. First year head coach TJ Rausch loved how his team responded after a rough start. “We talk a lot about when things don’t go our way what are we going to do? We gave up three runs and we answer back with three of our own so we responded really well. We were able to grind out the rest of the game and string some things together in the sixth for the win.” The orange and black start up the campaign 1-0 and travel to Muscatine tomorrow.

The Demon softball team started their season with a home doubleheader against Cardinal and split the action. The first game was a wild 14-13 victory where the Demons put up eight runs in the third to help build a 14-10 lead and they hung on for dear life to close it out. The orange and black peppered 13 hits from eight different players led by Bella Salazar going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of doubles. Leighton Salazar, Ella Greiner, and Olivia Hamilton all had a pair of knocks. Bella Salazar picked up the win in the circle tossing five innings giving up five earned tallies and eight hits. A 5-0 early deficit led to a 7-2 Demon loss in the nightcap. The team scattered seven hits headlined by a solo shot from Bella Salazar. Halle Cuddeback threw 5 1/3 innings surrendering six runs on 12 hits. Washington starts the summer 1-1 and they return home tonight for a single game against Clear Creek-Amana. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and listen to it all on FM 106.1 KCII and kciiradio.com.
