A matter regarding the Washington County Recycling Center’s renewal permit with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources was resolved at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.
The supervisors tabled a resolution two weeks ago to acknowledge a closure account for the center as required by Iowa Code, as the resolution listed the county’s newly estimated cost of $5,250 for the necessary procedures in the event of closing the facility. This discrepancy with the $5,000 listed in the next fiscal year budget and the application for the DNR led to a one-month extension after the current permit’s expiration date on May 19th to correct the issue.
County Engineer Jacob explained the solution he came to after previously telling the supervisors he would get a second opinion on the closure cost estimate, “As I was reviewing the code section and requirements and trying to figure out some stuff I saw the option of a letter of credit. So I talked with Dan [Widmer] about seeing if he could approach one of our banks. I felt that would be a pretty easy process to do than to go back and work with another engineer to try and come up with an estimate and make sure the DNR didn’t think that we were playing games.”
County Auditor Dan Widmer reiterated that he took no umbrage with the DNR staff he has communicated with on this issue, and the supervisors approved a letter of credit with Washington State Bank for $5,250.
