A memorable golf career at Sigourney ended with a silver medal when Maddie Hornback capped off her senior season with a second place showing at last week’s class 1A state girls’ golf meet in Marshalltown. 

Heading into day two at American Legion Golf Course, Hornback was sitting in the runner-up spot with a first round tally of 81 on Thursday and she followed that up with an 82 on Friday where she recorded seven pars and one birdie on hole 16. Her 21 over par final score of 163 outlasted third place by three strokes and that total was only bested by defending state champion and South Iowa Cedar League foe Greenlee-Smock of Lynnville-Sully with a 154. Hornback improved from a 39th place showing at last year’s state meet and she helped the Savages jump from 10th in 2021 to seventh this spring. Sigourney shot a 400 first round and 396 on Friday for a 796 (+228) total while Bishop-Garrigan won with 713. Reggie Talbert shot a 104 in round two for 207 altogether to tie for 44th, Maizy Cowman shot 97 for a 210 total, Claire Svenby carded a 113 for a 216 final, Zoe Webb had a 122 on Friday for 254 finish, and Julia VanEe closed with a 130 for a 262 two round score. 

Washington competed at River Valley Golf Course in Adel for the class 3A tournament and the defending state champions placed sixth out of 10 with a two day tally of 805 (+229). The crown was passed to Clear Lake with their winning score of 713. Makenna Conrad improved by eight strokes on the second day by shooting an 87 and the junior finished 17th with a total of 182. Kaylin Long placed 18th with a 91 second round and 184 total. Other scores included Alecia Goff 110 on Friday for 215 altogether, Mallary Johnson 117 for 224 total, Maci Williams 124 for 238 finish, and Haley Mitchell shot a 117 for a 242 two day score. 

Mid-Prairie was in Cedar Falls at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course for the class 2A meet and the Golden Hawks placed 10th by coupling a 403 first day with 392 second for a 795 (+219) total. Sumner-Fredericksburg won with a 703. Madelyn Bender led the team in 29th with a 94 second round and 192 total while Madi Davidson placed 30th shooting a 97 on Friday for 193 altogether. Elliott Debler shot 101 for a 205 total, Gabi Robertson managed a 100 for 206 tally, Addison English 107 for 212 finish, and Alexa Huber had a 105 round two for a 215 tournament score.
