The Mid-Prairie softball team didn’t take any days off, traveling to Mount Vernon to take on the No. 2 in Class 3A Mustangs Memorial Day night at the Van Metre Family softball complex. The Mustangs beat Mid-Prairie 10-0 in five innings. Offensively, Mount Vernon piled up six hits while building their lead with runs in each inning, scoring three times in the first, four in the second, a pair in the third and one in the fourth to end the contest early. They were aided by four Mid-Prairie errors defensively. The Golden Hawk offense had a tough time getting anything going against returning All-Stater Jenna Sprague, who recorded the shortened no-hitter against Mid-Prairie. The only base runner of the night for the Hawks was Landry Pacha drawing a two out, first inning walk. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Amy Hartsock-Williams talked about what she saw. “Brenna (Jehle), she’s a freshman. Credit to her and the left side of the infield it was definitely the hot corner tonight. They kept working hard and by the end of the game they were making the plays. After errors, we gave them eight runs tonight. Errors on plays that should have had us out of innings. I’m going to tell you, we’re that close. We were very happy with what we saw. I told these girls, other teams are in trouble because I saw, even though the score said 10-0, some really good things. By the end of this season, we will be playing with these girls and challenging teams like this.”

With the loss, Mid-Prairie falls to 1-2 on the year. Mount Vernon remains unbeaten at 6-0. The Golden Hawks are back on the diamond tonight in conference action when they entertain the No. 3 in Class 2A Wilton Beavers.
