The Mid-Prairie baseball and softball teams continue their run through the River Valley Conference tonight when they jump on the bus for Durant. The Golden Hawk baseball team is 4-1 this year after a 6-1 victory over Wilton on Tuesday. As a team, they are hitting .268 with Brock Harland and Collin Miller both over the .400 mark. Those two and Will Cavanagh have the team lead with seven hits each. Dylan Henry has a team best five driven in and Cain Brown has scored seven times. On the mound, the Mid-Prairie team ERA is 2.03 with Brady Weber, Miller, Alex Bean and Karson Grout all sporting sub-two marks. Miller, Bean, Grout and Brown all have pitching victories so far. As a staff they have allowed 20 hits through five games while striking out 48.
Durant is 4-2 this season and has finished just behind Mid-Prairie in the River Valley South standings during the Hawks’ division championship runs the last two seasons. The Wildcats were 7-1 winners at Tipton Tuesday. They are hitting .250 this year, led by senior Ben Orr at .545. The Wildcats have a 2.97 team ERA with Orr, Ethan Gast and Bryce Czarnetski all posting wins. The two teams have split their last 26 meetings, including last year’s doubleheader with the Hawks taking the first game 5-4 and Durant the nightcap 12-9.
The Mid-Prairie softball team is 1-3 on the year after a loss in Kalona 11-2 to No. 3 in Class 2A Wilton on Tuesday night. Mid-Prairie was beaten Monday on the road 10-0 by No. 2 in Class 3A Mount Vernon and also dropped a contest 9-2 to Keokuk. The Hawks lone win came in their season opener 9-0 against West Branch. Durant enters tonight with a 2-3 record on the year. On the weekend they went 1-2 in the Williamsburg tournament with losses to Pella Christian and Bondurant-Farrar and a win over East Marshall. The Wildcats are ranked No. 13 in Class 2A in this week’s poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The ‘Cats are hitting .397 as a team with Ally Happ at .611, one of four Wildcats .500 or better. In the circle, they have a 6.42 team ERA with Kylie Schult throwing 13 innings with a 2.62 mark. Durant has won 18 of the last 22 meetings in the series including a doubleheader sweep in 2021 12-0 and 14-8.
