An all KCII area softball showdown broke out in Winfield on Tuesday with the home Wolves taking advantage of a complete game shutout from Makiah Lower to down visiting Hillcrest Academy 5-0 on Tuesday.
As heard on KCII, Lower was going up against a Raven offense fresh off of a 17 hit performance last week, but the Wolves’ sophomore kept them in check for just five knocks without surrendering a run. She finished the seven inning affair with 108 pitches, nine strikeouts, and only two walks. The Wolves offense gave her support with a pair of runs in the first and single tallies in the third, fourth, and sixth innings. The offense scattered seven hits with Anna Anderson going 3-for-3. Josie Nelson, Jobey Malone, and Quin Smith picked up one RBI in the win. Grace Miller led the Raven offense with a single and two walks. Leah Bontrager pitched six frames in the circle surrendering five runs on seven hits.
Head Coach of the Wolves Scott McCarty tells KCII Sports Lower was in complete control. “She did a really nice job and continues to compete. Defensively we made the routine plays for her and that helps a pitcher gain confidence. Makiah had command of all three of her pitchers and when you do that at the high school level, you are going to be successful. Give her a lot of credit, she just competes her tail off.”
WMU gets back to .500 at 4-4 on the season and Hillcrest is now 1-6.
