
In the middle of playing everyday this week, the Highland summer teams won three out of four games on Tuesday and Wednesday with softball enjoying an area Southeast Iowa Super Conference victory.
The Huskies faced off with Columbus Community on Tuesday and it took six runs in the final two innings to down the Wildcats 8-4 on the road. Despite six errors defensively, Highland got contributions from the bats with Sarah Burton going 2-for-4 with one RBI and Mackinze Hora also brought in a run. Grace Batcheller tossed a complete game surrendering four runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out five. Columbus’ Lily Coil finished 3-for-5 at the dish with a pair of triples. Lily Coil twirled all seven frames giving up eight runs (two earned) on six hits and fanning 10 batters. The Huskies got behind the eight ball early last night and could never battle back in an 8-3 loss to Cardinal. Payton Brun was 2-for-4 in the loss and Jessica Kraus threw all seven innings surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 11 knocks and six strikeouts. The Huskies are now 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the SEISC. Columbus sits at 6-5 and 5-3 in the league.
The Highland baseball team had a non-conference showdown against HLV on Tuesday and rolled to a 7-1 win. Junior Ethan Paisley was in control all night on the hill hurling a complete game three hitter giving up just one run and one walk while striking out nine. He got some help from a 10 hit offense headlined by Chase Schultz going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Connor Grinstead and Tyler Thompson each had a pair of singles. A SEISC cross over matchup against Cardinal last night saw the Huskies score in each of the first five innings en route to an 11-3 victory. Kaige Vonnahme was 3-for-4 and Luke Miller smacked a two-run shot. Schultz was the winning pitcher with seven frames of three run ball (one earned) on five hits and eight punch outs. The red and white improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in conference.
