The Washington Municipal Airport has been awarded a grant from the United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of taxpayer dollars totalling $129,675. This is part of the $1 billion from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure law that provides funding to 85 airports across the country to improve terminals of all sizes.
The goals of the grants are to expand capacity at our nation’s airport terminals, increase energy efficiency, promote competition and provide greater accessibility for individuals with disabilities.
Washington Municipal Airport Commission Chair Joe Harvey shares the airport’s focus, “We were looking at the energy efficiency portion of that and we put in a grant request for adding solar panels to lower our energy expenditures at the airport for both the terminal buildings and the hangers and runway lighting.”
Total expenditure of this project is $135,000. The additional $5,325 is covered by the airport.
The Washington Municipal Airport is a self-funded operation. Most of its revenues come from fuel sales at the airport as well as hanger rent and land lease to farmers of the airport property.
