Several reports were discussed at the July 13th Washington School Board meeting in Brighton. One of these reports was the district’s performance in dealing with students in the at-risk programs.

The results from the programs were generally positive, with 50% of students served at Lincoln Elementary School improving their attendance, and 71% of students served at Lincoln were phased off the program due to meeting their goals. At the high school level, 92% of senior students in the program graduated with their peers.

Washington Schools Super Intendent Willie Stone says that one of the major areas that will become a focus is on dealing with students with childhood trauma. “Last year, we went through a program with Dr. Matthew Vasquez, and he is really big on childhood trauma and talking about how that affects students. So we’re really starting to focus on that because, to be quite frank, many students in our area are dealing with some trauma, and we need to be better prepared on how to work with, educate and make those one-on-one connections.”

The next School Board meeting will be on August 10th, at 7 pm in Washington.
