The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team heads west today to meet Cascade in the quarterfinal round of the Class 2A State tournament in Carroll. The Golden Hawks have an overall record of 18-10 after knocking off No. 6 West Marshall 3-1 in the substate final last week at Solon. The Hawks hit .290 as a team with five players over .300 led by Karson Grout at .392 with a team best 28 RBI. Cain Brown has a team best 32 hits and 32 runs. They have a team ERA of 3.71. Grout is 4-0 in 26 innings with a 2.39 ERA. Collin Miller, Brock Harland and Brady Weber all have three or more wins. This is Mid-Prairie’s sixth all-time trip to state.
Cascade is 20-5 this year. They were champions of the River Valley North and qualified for state with a 6-3 win over West Liberty at substate a week ago. The Cougars are hitting .296 as a team with four players over .300 led by Tanner Simon at .384 with 28 hits and 26 runs scored. Cade Rausch has a team best 24 RBI. The Cougar’s team ERA is 1.93, led by Jack Carr with an 8-1 record in 52 innings with a 0.80 ERA. Cooper Hummel is 7-1. This is the Cougars fifth trip to state in school history. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Kyle Mullet talked about why this Golden Hawk team is special. “I think it’s special because of all the work that we’ve put in. This team has talked about going to the state tournament. To lose the substate game last year against Davis County, get upset, we didn’t prepare ourselves the right way for that game and going to state in 2020 and trying to get back there. These guys are winners and they want to win and they want to have success at this game, same thing I want to do as a coach. After going through that last year that’s all we’ve talked about since day one. This is our goal and that’s what we want to do. What makes it special is seeing these guys playing their best and having fun. It makes me so happy as a coach to see them have success after all of the work that they’ve put in. For me it’s about building young men and having good character. We do it that way and let the championships and state tournament runs work themselves out.”
These two teams met June 9th with Cascade scoring a 3-0 win. You can hear all of the action between Mid-Prairie and Cascade Tuesday live from Merchant’s Park in Carroll on all KCII platforms and signals, beginning with the Washington HyVee Pregame Show at 1p.m. And first pitch at 1:30.
