We begin our top 10 countdown for the biggest sports stories at Mid-Prairie over the last year on the mat. As a junior, Mid-Prairie 285lber Gannon Callahan came up one match shy of advancing to Des Moines. He made sure that wasn’t how his career ended. Despite suffering a shoulder injury midway through football season in a contest at Williamsburg, Callahan found himself in the IAWrestle rankings at No. 11. He would have his first matches following the injury after Christmas break. After a tough finish at the conference tournament at Monticello, he began the postseason with a sectional championship at Benton, and backed that up with a runner-up finish at Districts in Williamsburg to advance to state for the first time in his career. Once in Des Moines, he opened the tournament with a victory over Chase Brooks of Charles City before finishing with a 1-2 record. His year ended at 24-5 overall.
That trip to state closed out a tremendous career in black and gold for Callahan as he leaves Mid-Prairie with an overall record of 119-39, 10th most victories in Golden Hawk history and a .753 winning percentage. He was a 30 match winner twice and was the 14th member of the Mid-Prairie 100 win club. Tune in tomorrow for our 9th biggest story from last year in Mid-Prairie athletics as we highlight Golden Hawk archery.
