Highland Superintendent Ken Crawford has provided an update on the Highland School District’s Wastewater Project.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) changed its ammonia output limits, resulting in this $1.1 million project. Crawford and the rest of the Highland board have been working on the Wastewater Project since 2018. Construction has been halted due to material shortages. The project was originally scheduled to be completed during the spring and summer of 2022.

Superintendent Crawford shared with KCII News why he is enthusiastic about the project’s completion, “[we had a] conversation with DNR and getting everything lined up that we needed. While it is not an exciting project, possibly you know, as much as other things we got going on, but it is very needed and very much staying in line with how we want to treat the environment and having our school make sure we follow all the rules we have to. Very excited to get that done, but it is still going to take a little bit of time.”

He anticipates that the project will begin construction mid-September,, pause for the winter, and then resume and hopefully finish by the spring of 2023.
