Former U.S. Navy Admiral Michael Franken is the Democratic Senate nominee for Iowa, and he is looking to unseat longtime Republican Senator Charles Grassley in the upcoming November elections. Franken has recently called out Sen. Grassley for a debate, and while no date for a debate has been announced, Grassley’s camp has said that the Senator will debate his opponent as he has done in the past.
When and if announced, this debate could shed light on just how in the middle the former Admiral is. Franken, when he spoke with KCII, said that he would not be afraid to step away from the party line and talked about his previous experiences of differentiating himself from the group. “Right now, what we have are people enslaved to party politics. It’s all about what my boss says, what Mitch McConnell says, and how can I just weasel by. I’m not that type of weaseling by person. I was the one guy in the room that said the invasion of Iraq was a bad idea as the most junior member in the room.”
Sen. Grassley has thrown his support behind the bi-partisan infrastructure bill but did vote against the CHIPS & Science Act due to what he thought were unneeded provisions that were added to the legislation. The CHIPS and Science Act has received support from U.S. House nominee Christina Bohannan.
