The top 10 countdown of the best sports stories from the 2021-22 academic year concludes today with number one on our list. This countdown includes area schools Columbus Community, Highland, Lone Tree, Winfield-Mt. Union, WACO, Sigourney, and Keota with the best story taking us to the wrestling mat when one Sigourney wrestler could not be stopped.
Heading into the 2022 Iowa Girls High School State Wrestling Championships in Coralville on January 21st and 22nd, Sigourney-Keota’s Reanah Utterback was a favorite to come away with the 110 pound title. The freshman left no doubt while barely breaking a sweat going 5-for-5 in matches with five pins including four of them in the first period. Her dominance on the mat led to a selection on the All-Iowa girls wrestling team that went to the top 24 grapplers in the state and she was just one of five freshman chosen. Utterback had her way on the boys’ side as well becoming just the fifth girl in Iowa High School history to qualify for boys state en route to a 35-8 record at 106 lbs. She was a part of a Savage team that rolled their way to a 23-1 dual season, were crowned sectional team champs, had nine grapplers qualify for districts, and three that finished the season at Wells Fargo Arena.
