Just 24 hours in-front of their first official live action of the year, a Gatorade scrimmage at West Liberty, KCII Sports takes a look at the upcoming schedule for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team. In 2021, the Hawks finished with a 6-4 overall record, including a 4-1 mark and runner-up finish in Class 2A District Six. With this being the second year of a district cycle with the Iowa High School Athletic Association, all opponents, in-and-out of district, and their order remain the same, with only the venue changing. The games that were at Dwight G. Sattler Field in Wellman in 2021 will be on the road this year and the teams Mid-Prairie traveled to last season have to visit Wellman this year.
That means the Golden Hawk’s non-district schedule once again features West Burlington Notre Dame, Sigourney-Keota and Iowa City Regina in that order to start the year. The Hawks will travel to Bill Nelson Field in West Burlington August 26th to open the season and will square off with the rival Regals for the first time since 2008, on the road in Iowa City week three, while the Snakes will make the road trip to Dwight G. Sattler Field in the year’s second week. A season ago, Mid-Prairie posted a pounding of West Burlington 55-13 to open the year before dropping a road game to the Cobras in the Snake Pit 42-12 and were forced to forfeit their game with Iowa City Regina in Week 3 due to illness and injury, leaving the Hawks with a 1-2 record outside of district play last year.
In district, beginning in week four, Mid-Prairie will face, in order, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont September 16th, Central Lee September 23rd, Williamsburg September 30th, Centerville October 7th and Davis County October 14th in the regular season finale. The games against the Rockets and Big Reds will be on the road while the Hawks, Raiders and Mustangs all come to Wellman. Mid-Prairie’s only district loss a year ago came at Williamsburg 24-21 while they beat all other competitors by a combined 199-64 score. The Class 2A playoffs begin this season on October 21st.
Special dates on the calendar for Golden Hawk fans this year include the Gatorade scrimmage hosted by West Liberty August 19th, the week one season opener August 26th at West Burlington, the home opener September 2nd against Sigourney-Keota, the Hawks district opener September 16th at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Homecoming September 30th against Williamsburg and Senior Night October 14th against Davis County.
You can catch live play-by-play of each Golden Hawk football game all season long on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com, starting with the season opener in West Burlington August 26th with the Washington HyVee Pregame Show at 6:30 and kickoff between the Hawks and Falcons at 7p.m. from Bill Nelson Field.
